about me

Hello, my name is Serhat KÖKSAL. I am a geologist. I was born in Ankara, TURKEY in 1970. I'm working in the Radiogenic Isotope Laboratory of the Central Laboratory of Middle East Technical University (METU)-Ankara/TURKEY. Zircon is a subject of my Ph.D. thesis entitled as the "Zircon Typology and Chemistry of the Granitoids from Central Anatolia, Turkey" which was conducted under supervision of  Prof. Dr. M. Cemal Göncüoglu. My wife Dr. Fatma Toksoy-Köksal studying on mineral chemistry and ophiolite petrogenesis is working at METU, also.

 RESEARCH INTERESTS

 - Geochronology, isotope geology, mineralogy, granitoids (petrology, petrogenesis), zircon (typology, chemistry).

 EDUCATION

 PhD.

University: Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, February 1998 - 2005

Department: Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Geological Engineering – Ph.D. Program of Mineralogy and Petrography

Thesis Subject: Zircon Typology and Chemistry of the Granitoids from Central Anatolia, Turkey. The origin and petrogenesis of selected rocks from the Central Anatolian Granitoids units of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex in Turkey was reconstructed by using zircon typology method combined with cathodoluminescence, electron-microprobe analyses on zircons and supplementary geological, petrographical, and wr-geochemical studies.

MSc.

University: Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, September 1992 – January 1996

Department: Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Geological Engineering – M.Sc. Program of Mineralogy and Petrography

Thesis Subject: “Geological and Petrological Characteristics of The Idis Dagi Avanos Area, Nevþehir-Central Anatolia”. Geology, petrography  and petrology included geochemistry of the intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks in the area from the Central Anatolia. Also investigation of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in the area, considering the tectonic relationships with the igneous rocks. Granitic and volcanic rock samples were analysed by X-Ray Fluorescense Spectrometer (ARL 8420) in the Department of Geology of the University of Keele, UK. Geochemical analyses were evaluated by various petrological diagrams and classification schemes.

BS.

University: Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, September 1987 - July 1992

Department: Bachelor  of Science in Department of Geological Engineering

Graduation Project: "Geology and Petrography of Hacimahmutusagi Region (Ortakoy-Aksaray)" involved geological and petrographical studies on the granitic, metamorphic, and ophiolitic rocks in the area from Central Anatolia/Turkey.
