The aim of this course is to develop your writing skills to the point that you are able to produce well written essays. The skills that were introduced in TEFL 171 Expository Writing I provide the base for longer writing tasks, and essential skills like outlining, drafting, note-taking and citation are taught. In addition, note-taking from oral sources (lectures), useful abbreviations and how to perform timed writing tasks will be included in the course.
Materials: All the reference books that were suggested for TEFL 171 remain useful, although you should be wary of Collins Cobuild dictionary which is largely based on spoken usage, and therefore not always optimal for written tasks. In this course some parts of the books Successful College Writing, by Kathleen T McWhorter (Boston: Bedford/St Martin's, 2003), Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test by Deborah Phillips (2nd edn,New York 1996), and Refining Composition Skills by Regina L Smalley and Mary K Ruetten (4th edn. Pacific Grove: Heinle & Heinle, 1995) will be used.
Grading: Homework (on time and satisfactorily completed) 20% Peer Reviews 20% Mid Term Essay 25% Final Essay 30%
Attendance is mandatory. Absence from more than 30% of classes without a Medical Report endorsed by the METU Medical Centre will result in a fail grade.
