Buyurman Baykal is appointed as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Middle East Technical University (METU). He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London UK, in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

Prof. Buyurman Baykal has research and teaching interests in theory and applications of machine learning, signal processing, detection, estimation and optimization. He is also involved in communication network research with particular interest in wireless networks and network management issues. Prof. Baykal is a past Associate Editor of the following journals: International Journal of Mobile Network Design and Innovation (Inderscience Publishers), Computer Networks (Elsevier Science), IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Sensor Letters (American Scientific Publishing). He served in technical and organization committees of many international conferences including International Conference on Communications (ICC), Globecom, Wireless Internet Conference (WICON) and International Conference on Pervasive Services (ICPS). Prof. Baykal (co)authored articles and has been cited many times in prestigious SCI journals such as IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems,  IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Neural Networks, Neurocomputing, Computer Networks, Wireless Networks, Digital Signal Processing and Radio Science. He holds national and international patents.

Corporate management is also in the professional interests of Prof. Baykal. He held executive positions in Havelsan in 2004-2011 including the vice president position responsible for a major business unit. He has been a frequent consultant and collaborator to the industry. Some major companies he worked with as a principal investigator in research and development projects have been Aselsan, Roketsan, Netaş, Esen SI, Arçelik, WAT Motor, Savronik and Karel. His industrial experience include model based systems engineering, electronic system design, management of large scale multi-site software development, software/system product lines, networked C4ISR/C2IS systems, multi-sensor data fusion/target tracking, strategic management, knowledge management and continuous process/product improvement.
