Instructor: Erdoğan Yıldırım
This course is aimed to a discussion of the kinship-based structure of tribal organization and its relation to supra-tribal and non-tribal forms of social organization in Central Asia and the Middle East. We will deal with the concept of the segmentary lineage system and its critics; tribal structure as an organizational framework functioning simultaneously at various levels like social, political and juridical; the centrifugal and centralizing tendencies in tribalism and its relation to the central state structures, both in tribally formed states and non-tribal central states.
