Staffing decisions should be made to maximize strength, not minimize weaknesses.

THE JOB DESCRIPTION

Formulating an accurate job description is essential to find the right person for a job.

The unit director or responsibilities manager prepares the job description if the unit is small( fewer than ten employees); if the unit is midsize (ten to twenty), the director and one or more other members; large departmental committee perform the job description.

ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS OF THE JOB DESCRIPTION

Regardless of who does the initial preparation, two specific action guides must prevail:

a) the organizitional goals

b) responsible person(s) shoulb be directly involved before the job is finally approved.

Typically, job description are written statements composed of two parts: job specifications and required job qualifications.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The purpose of the job announcement is to make the availability of a position known to larger number of candidates and provide information so that those who may be interested can decide whether or not they wish to apply.

job specifications: major responsibilites assignments, a job title does not always represnet res. & ass.
Minumu qualifications. Experince, skill, abilites, knowledge etc.

· Completed official Application form: personal, educational, experience, brief statements of philosophy, names & addresses of references.

· Transcripts

· Letters of recommendation

· Supervisor’s assessments

· Observed performance

· Interviews: not personal questions eg: what does your father do? Are you member of ? what is oyur religion?

THE HIRING WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION

Reasons:

Provide career ladders for advancement. Employees feel that they would opportunity for higher level position if someone retires or leave.
Knows stregths & weakness of its own employees.
The period of time for employee orientation is reduced.

Disadvantages:

Stagnation lack of fresh ideas.
Maintaining an in house personnel training program is costly
Less chance to hire appropriate person to tthe position because of limited number of qualified candidates
Difficulty to lead former peers.
