Dissertation: An Integrated Telemetric Multi-Channel Sieve Electrode for Nerve
Regeneration Applications
The purpose of the thesis is to develop a system to
have direct access to the nervous system by recording electrical discharges of the
individual axons of the peripheral nervous system. The system is composed of
three main parts: a silicon micromachined sieve electrode, on-chip electronics and
a transdermal link. The electrode has a number of holes (as small as 1mm in
diameter) for deliberately severed nerves to regenerate through, and also
activated iridium recording/stimulating sites around the through-holes. Any two
of these sites can be selected by a user to record activity simultaneously. The
recorded signals are then amplified, multiplexed, digitized and decoded by the
on-chip electronics designed in a 3-µm CMOS process. These decoded signals
are then sent to the outside world using an inductively coupled RF telemetry link.
The link is also used to send power and channel selection data to the on-chip
electronics.
