217 Statistics in Psychology

Purpose: This course will be the continuation of
Statistics in Psychology I. The purpose
of the course is to teach you several statistical tools that will be helpful to
analyze data collected by both experimental and non-experimental research
methods. In the process you will learn
how to compare groups by way of t-test and various forms of analysis of
variance.
In the mean time, you will learn
how to enter data by way of SPSS for windows by using mainframe computer. This learning will take place in the
Computer Lab of Beseri Bilimler. A
teaching assistant will show you how.
Textbook: Heiman, G. W. (2000). Basic
Statistics for the behavioral sciences (3rd ed.). Boston: Houghton Miffin
Company. The book is sold in the
bookstore and also placed in the reserve section of the library. Also any
statistics for the behavioral sciences will be helpful.

Requirements: Attendance to both lectures and lab hours. Two midterm exams and
a final. There will be five exercises.
The questions taken from the exercises of the textbook.
Contribution of each requirement:
Exams : 25% each
Final: 15 %
Class exercises 5% each (there will be five of them)
Paper: At the end of the
semester, turn in a paper which will cover literature, formulating a
hypothesis, collecting data, analyzing it with SPSS and writing the results.
The paper should not exceed 10 pages with all the materials. In formulating your hypothesis you can
utilize the knowledge obtained from the course Research Methods I. (10%)
To do the paper, you need to see me to decide on the
topic. Also need to learn how to enter
data and analyze it by way of SPSS.
A group of
three to five may do the same topic and paper. The papers must be according to the Turkish Psychological
Writing Style, which follows the APA
paper writing style. You probably learned the style during your first
year at Psychology.

Fourth week

Factorial ANOVA and multiple comparisons chapter 14
Sixth-7th weeks

One-way within subjects ANOVA and multiple comparisons

Factorial within subject ANOVA and multiple
comparisons
9th-10th weeks
The
reading materials for the topics 5 and 6 will be provided
7.
Mixed design and Multiple comparisons 12th week
8.
Chi square and non parametric procedures chapter 15
14-15th weeks
The final will be a comprehensive one with multiple choice- questions
