Math 496- SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT STUDY &RESEARCH
IMPORTANT:
!Note that this is a 2-credit course and is supposed to be taken as an
extra course to the standard curriculum. You can take this course
only as a “departmental elective” or “not included” course. Another course criterion is that
you have to be a third or fourth-year mathematics major with a CGPA of
at least 3.00. Also, the two credits you will receive from this course
cannot be used to complete your credit requirements to graduate.!

classes will be face-to-face!

Course Objectives: The
aim of this course is to familiarize students with mathematical
research. Students will be asked to choose a research paper, analyze it
in detail throughout the semester, try to ask new questions about it
and prepare a final presentation both in written and oral form.
Course Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, a student will:
- read and analyze a mathematical academic paper of suitable level in full detail,
- produce her/his own presentation,
- examples and/or new ideas about an academic paper,
- make oral and written presentations about her/his research.
Instructional Methods: Independent study, in class discussions.
Reading Materials:
Each student will choose a suitable research paper on Applied Algebraic
Topology. Suggestions will be provided by the instructor.
Assessment of Student Learning:
Class participation: 30%
Oral presentation: 40%
Report of the paper: 30%
Bonus (if the student finds a suitable research paper on her/his own): 5%
