Welcome to TEFL 273 Introduction to Linguistics I

This course is designed to develop in you a conscious awareness of language as a cognitive, neurological and expressive system and to investigate the details of the sub-sections of that system.  Starting with the classic questions 'what is language'  and 'what are the universals of language' , we move on to see where and how language is processed in the human brain.  Your understanding of this component will be tested in a mid term exam.  The course then addresses the sub-systems of language, starting with the physical science of phonetics and moving on to the more theoretical aspects of the sound system with an introduction to phonology.  This component is also tested with a midterm exam and , in addition, there is a quiz to test that you are able to use the International Phonetic Alphabet accurately.  Morphophonetics, which will have been introduced in the last week of our phonology lessons, leads us to an introduction to descriptive morphology, and the final weeks of the semester are taken up with an introduction to the basic concepts and theories of Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis, where the use of language is analysed according to certain understandings of human language behaviour. These components will be included in the final exam, which also requires you to show that you remember the subjects studied earlier in the semester

Classes will comprise two hours of lecture followed by one hour of classwork and discussion.  Students will be expected to prepare for classes with assigned readings and research; Fromkin, Rodman and Hyams (FRH), is  the main coursebook and other materials will be available from a variety of sources: eg the library, on-line, as links on my website, as photocopies.

I hope you will enjoy the course.
