General Description:  In this course students are required to conduct a piece of original research according to agreed, conventional and academic  methodological and formatting standards.   Issues of originality, validity, academic worth, and a wide variety of presentation-related topics are discussed.  Both MLA and APA styles of writing up your research are taught, and students write their papers in the style that is appropriate for their subject matter.  

The course is taught in a mixed lecture-and-workshop fashion, with students required to analyse texts and to produce their own writing in class;  their main research project will take all term and be mostly written outside of class, however. 

Grading:  Participation and classroom activities 10%

                  First draft  40% (NB points removed for not meeting the deadline)

                  Final draft  50% (NB points removed for not meeting the deadline)

The final paper will be assessed according to all of the issues discussed in class (and please read the extra guidelines on this web site), but as a general rule the grades will be calculated in the following manner:

Depth 25%

Structure 25%

Language 25%

Referencing 25%
