Welcome to my web page for course 407 The Novel II. Announcements and information related to the course will be posted here from time to time.
This semester we will study three modern novels: Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness Graham Greene The Power and the Glory Angela Carter Nights at the Circus
We will study them out of chronological order, so that you can read the Angela Carter before other students get to all the materials in the library. As you know, this year's METU British Novelists Conference is all about Angela Carter, and it will therefore also be beneficial for you to have finished reading the novel before the conference. So we are going to start with Conrad and then do the Carter, and finish with the Greene.
Heart of Darkness is available in the METU library, on Project Gutenberg and in various other etext versions, and even on books.google.com . Fool's Quiz
Who is this? (a) Angela Carter (b) Geoffrey Chaucer (c) Raoul Dahl (d) Joseph Conrad (e) Virginia Woolf
And who is this? Could it be (a) D H Lawrence (b) Geoffrey Chaucer? (c) Jeanette Winterson (d) Orhan Pamuk or (e) Charles Dickens?
Now for a tricky one... Who is this? Is it (a) Aphra Behn (b) Agatha Christie (c) Adolph Hitler (c) Angela Carter or (e) A. Conan Doyle?
I'm sure you know this one: my guess is that it must be (a) Virginia Woolf or (b) Mary Shelley or (c) Peter Ackroyd or (d) William Shakespeare, but definitely it can't be (e) Charles Dickens (but can someone who looks so serious have written Pickwick Papers?)
OK, I know you're waiting for this one so here it is.... (a) Jane Austen! ..... sorry, did I mean (b) George Eliot! Er, no, perhaps (c) Graham Greene! doesn't seem likely though. Perhaps (d) George Orwell! Oh, I give up... You try.
