Prof. Dr. Mustafa Verşan Kök was born in 1960 and completed his primary school education in the
International School of Prague in the Czech Republic. On graduation from Ankara Atatürk High
School, he was admitted to Middle East Technical University and completed a B.Sc. in Petroleum
and Natural Gas Engineering in 1983. Prof. Kök also received his Ph.D. degree in the field of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering in 1990 from Middle East Technical University. Between
1986-87 he has worked in SHELL company as a well-site operation engineer. In 1993, he joined
CNRS in France and later in 1994, he joined ELF company research center for his Post-Doc
Between 2001 – 2006, Professor Kök held the post of Advisor to the President of TUBITAK (The
Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) as well as National Contact Point (NCP)
and Programme Committee member of Turkey for the EU 6thFramework Programme (FP6)
priority of Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems and Joint Research Center
Dr. Kök was awarded many national and international awards for more than 35 projects. In 2007
and 2008, Prof. Kök received Science Awards from the Turkish Mining Development Foundation and
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation. Dr. Kök, who has received more than 20 Outstanding
Achievement awards, has received the International Leading Scientist and Engineer Award (OIC) in
2008 and has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Kazan Federal University on
February 28, 2019.
Dr. Kök has published 202 papers in SCI journals and 81 international conference papers. He has
received more than 4.500 citations for his publications and has a current WoS h-index of 41 (44 for Scopus).
Professor Kök was appointed as the Head of Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering
in May 2015. In November 2015, he was elected as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Since 2016
to date, he serves as the President of Middle East Technical University.
Dr. Kök is the Principal Member of Turkish Academy of Science (TÜBA).
