About the Course

The course is intended to give preservice teachers an opportunity to involve in non-governmental organizations in order to carry out tasks that increase responsibility for a better society.  It is aimed that the preservice teachers will gain knowledge and skills about understanding the existing social problems, especially in relation to education, and to develop a sense of possible solutions through conducting voluntary work. At the end of the semester, students should be able to:

  1. Identify social problems in relation to education,
  2. Develop solution strategies for identified social problems,
  3. Carry out voluntary tasks for non-governmental organizations.

It is expected that preservice teachers will consider voluntary tasks as a way of understanding society and education from a more realistic perspective at the end of the course. The course aims to increase preservice teachers’ awareness of the social problems and develop certain ideas of voluntary works that will be helpful in solving such problems.

The following instructional activities will be designed for the students:

  1. Analysis of several different non-governmental organizations and how they try to impact the society.
  2. Weekly voluntary community service in non-governmental organizations.
  3. Periodic reports of works completed in community service and the perceived impact on society.
  4. Self-reflection of the impact of community service on ideas about teaching and society.

You are expected to work 28 hours in the non-governmental organizations through the semester.
