Research

I am interested in the question of how children learn, represent, and understand language. Using real-time methodologies, I investigate the moment-by-moment interpretation of language in children and adults to understand how our language processing mechanism develops from childhood into adulthood. I am also interested in how cognitive or social status (e.g., having an impairment or having a social disadvantage) might impact language processing and other cognitive abilities (e.g., memory, inhibition, prediction). Currently, I am collaborating with Hugh Rabagliati of the University of Edinburgh on language and cognitive development in Syrian refugee children, Umut Özge of METU Cognitive Science on semantic processing in Turkish, and with Joshua Hartshorne of Boston College and Jesse Snedeker of Harvard University on implicit causality and anaphora resolution in Turkish.

Ongoing Projects

March, 2018-March 2020: Language and cognitive development in under-represented populations: A study on refugee children in Turkey. Funded by British Academy, Newton Advanced Fellowship, NAF2R2\100075. In collaboration with Hugh Rabagliati, University of Edinburgh.

September 2016- September 2018: An investigation of neural development accounts: Interpretation of Turkish morphosyntax in young children and Broca's patients. Funded by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)- 2232 Support Program for Returning Scientists.
