Catalogue Description

 

Catalogue: This course aims to explore the impact of e-learning in business and the business impact of e-learning. Tries to provide an understanding related with the impact of ICT and e-transformation, types of e-learning, implementation of e-learning, business drivers for e-learning. Explains the issues related with investing in e-learning, organizational capabilities for successful e-learning solutions and business success with e-learning. Discusses and evaluates the e-learning industry landscape, market processes in e-learning business, e-learning business design, business models, success factors in e-learning business, and the future of e-learning business.

 

 


Course Objectives and Goals

This course offers participants the opportunity to explore the impact of e-learning in business and emerging business side of e-learning. The main objective of the course is to enable participants to acquire an integrated understanding of the interrelated subjects and issues involved in the business of e-learning and to prepare them to respond effectively to those issues and processes which impact the success of e-learning ventures. Upon completion of this course, class participants should be able to:

  1. Explain changing needs and conditions in knowledge based economy and tell the impact of ICT and e-transformation.
  2. Explain the role of technology in learning and tell the importance of e-learning in knowledge management and organizational learning.
  3. Identify the types of e-learning and business drivers for e-learning.
  4. Identify educational, organizational and strategic issues associated with developing and delivering e-learning.
  5. Explain the needs for investing in e-learning and defend the business productivity and benefits of an e-learning business solution.
  6. Identify the organizational capabilities required for successful e-learning solution and organizational learning.
  7. Describe the e-learning industry landscape including the characteristics of players, products and markets.
  8. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the business design principles with the skills necessary to carry out business analysis and use business planning models impacting the success of e-learning ventures.
  9. Describe the dynamic nature of e-learning marketplace by conducting product and market analysis.
  10. Discuss the market processes and perform the development of business and marketing plans in the business of e-learning.
  11. Discuss legal and ethical considerations, partnerships and funding, special issues including political and cultural issues in the e-learning business by relating with global environment
  12. Conduct critical evaluations of different ventures in the business of e-learning through various perspectives including technology, finance, market and partnership.
  13. Demonstrate knowledge of strategies for funding new e-learning ventures.
  14. Drive strategies for collaboration, opportunities for marketing, efficiencies and economies in e-learning delivery and calculate return on investments;
  15. Discuss the future of e-learning business.

 

Course Outline

1st week: First meeting, review of course syllabus and requirements, discussion about recent profound changes in the knowledge based economy and society regarding the impact of ICT and e-transformation,   

2nd week: The role of technology in learning, knowledge management and organizational learning

3rd week: Introduction to e-learning (basic concepts, definitions and perspectives), types of e-learning, and business drivers for e-learning, implementation of e-learning.

4th week: organizational renewal and investing in e-learning, benefits and ROI of e-learning.

5th week: organizational capabilities required for successful e-learning and change management

6th week: The e-learning Industry Landscape (players, products, markets), Midterm Examination

7th week: Preliminary session aimed at providing fundamental concepts needed for the participants to construct a business understanding

8th week: Business design principles, market processes in e-learning business,

9th week: e-learning market analysis, e-learning business analysis, Developing Marketing Plan Assignment Due

10th week: e-learning business design, e-learning business models

11th week: e-learning marketplace, Developing Business Plan Assignment Due

12th week: Legal and ethical considerations, strategic partnerships and funding, special issues in e-learning and the global environment

13th week: Key success factors in e-learning business, the future of e-learning business

14th week: Student project presentations and final examination

Laboratory Work Required

During laboratory works, participants will study the course assignments and projects and perform necessary research related with the course topics.

Course Requirements

1. Complete classroom activities. (300 pts) Complete class attendance is expected. Completion of the reading assignments and classroom participation is also expected.

2. Midterm. (100 pts) A paper-pencil written exam o review what students learned during the lectures.

3.  First project assignment. (200 pts) Participants will design, develop, write a rationale and present their first project assignment including analysis and selection of tools, methods and systems to manage knowledge in education and research organizations.

4.  Second project assignment. (250 pts)  Participants will develop a knowledge management strategy for solving the identified knowledge management problem.

This is a hands-on course and will require additional time on the computer outside of scheduled class times. This course is designed for students with intermediate level of computer literacy. The goal is to develop skills and backround to start effective knowledge management initiatives for education and research organizations.

5.  Final Exam. (150 pts)  A paper-pencil written exam o review what students learned during the lectures about knowledge management in education and research.
