Born in Çorlu-Tekirdağ in 1960, Prof. Kök completed his primary education at the International School of Prague (Czech Republic). Upon graduation from Ankara Atatürk High School in Türkiye, he received his B.Sc. degree in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1983. Between 1986-1987, he worked for SHELL Petroleum company as a well-site operation engineer. After completing his PhD at METU in 1990, Dr. Kök conducted postdoctoral research at CNRS-INSA de LYON Research Center (Institiute National Des Sciences Appliquees, Laboratoire de Thermochimie Minerale) in France and ELF Petroleum Company. Between 1995 and 2000, Dr. Kök worked as a visiting researcher for 3 months each year in the UK (University of Salford), Germany (Karlsruhe University), and Hungary (Budapest University of Technology and Economics). From December 2014 to May 2015, he also conducted research as a visiting professor at CNRS-ICARE in Orleans, France.
Between 2001-2006, Prof. Kök served as the Advisor to the President of TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). His position at TÜBİTAK included being the National Contact Point for Energy, Transport and Environment under the EU's 6th Framework Programme. He also served as a Programme Committee Member in Brussels, and the Chairman of the Engineering Research Group Executive Committee.
Prof. Kök’s academic works included 206 articles in SCI journals and 83 international conference papers. He has served as project coordinator in 4 European Union Sixth Framework Program projects in the fields of energy and environment, and as project coordinator/researcher in 6 international and 15 TÜBİTAK projects. His publications in international indexes received more than 6000 citations and his Web of Science (WoS) h-index is 48 (51 on Scopus and 56 on Google).
Prof. Kök received the Science Awards from the National Foundation for Development of Mining in 2007 and from the Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation in 2008. With more than 20 outstanding achievement awards, Prof. Kök also received the TÜBİTAK Incentive Award in 1999 and the International Leader Scientist and Engineer Award by OIC in 2008.
On April 19, 2023, Prof. Kök was honored with the Jubilee Medal of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate title by Kazan Federal University on February 28, 2019 and by Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University on November 5, 2022.
Prof. Kök, who was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at METU in November 2015, has been serving as the Rector of METU since July 2016. Prof. Dr. Kök is a Principal Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA).
